The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) has granted approval for Georgia Gwinnett College’s (GGC) accreditation. The SACS accreditation signifies the college meets all the basic standards educational quality. Students attending GGC will be eligible to receive federal aid in order to attend and the degrees received from the college will now be more widely recognized by graduate programs and potential employers.

Opening on August 18, 2006 with approximately 100 students, GGC held its first commencement ceremony on May 29, 2009 featuring U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus speaking to the class of approximately 40 graduates along with their friends, families, community leaders and college staff. The college now expects to enroll over 3000 students in the fall semester and is well on its way to becoming a strong educational institution for the state.

While there are no established timetables for gaining accreditation, GGC’s ability to achieve this tremendous goal in less than three years is a testimony to the drive and determination of the college president, Dr. Daniel J. Kaufman, as well as his faculty and staff. Georgia’s first new 4-year public college in over 100 years is now accredited and prepared to continue adding new degree programs and students in the many years to come.

That is the song being sung by baseball fans all over Gwinnett, as we anxiously await the beginning of the season with our own hometown Gwinnett Braves. If you were wanting that “ballgame” to be the first game in the new stadium, then you are our of luck unless you are one of the lucky people who already have tickets. The first home game is sold out, but there are plenty of other opportunities available to see the new team and the new stadium throughout the summer.

Many local organizations, including the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, the Duluth Rotary Club and the Suwanee Business Alliance, are taking advantage of opportunities for group events at the new stadium. It is a great venue and group ticket packages are very reasonable. Groups, clubs and businesses are recognizing this as a fun and appealing way to get everyone together in a relaxed atmosphere for a very enjoyable experience.

If you are a member of the Suwanee Business Alliance, then don’t miss our night at the ballpark on May 9th. If you’re not a member, then come to our next meeting on Wednesday (4/8/09) at the Chattahoochee Run Clubhouse (6:00-8:00) and then join the group. The gates to the park opened this weekend for the first guest while an official “grand opening” will be hosted by the City of Suwanee on Saturday, November 8th from 2:00 to 5:00.

The residents of Settles Bridge and Barrington subdivisions have the added benefit of being right next door to this beautiful park with sidewalk access from their neighborhood entrance areas. All of the residential neighborhoods along Suwanee Dam Road northwest of Peachtree Industrial will benefit from their close proximity to this new park and many neighborhoods are within easy walking or bicycling distance. Residents can enjoy the opportunity to picnic in the park or just watch their children play in the playground and along the trails. This is just one more reason to consider Suwanee when looking for a great place to “play hard, live well and smile more.”

The City of Suwanee shares many of the same goals as Gwinnett county in upgrading the solid waste management systems within our community. These goals include expanding recycling opportunities, saving energy, improving collection efficiencies, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, environmental enhancements and improving resident quality of life. As city officials analyze Suwanee’s needs in 2009, opportunites will be provided for citizen input and feedback throughout the process.

Again, the view over the Town Center Park continues to change daily as construction continues on the new Suwanee City Hall building. I was fortunate this morning to catch the sunrise streaming through steel frame for the top of the clock tower being assembled by welders on the ground before lifting it into its final position 115 feet above the park. The beauty of the sky and bright orange sun surrounding the early morning construction activity reflects Suwanee’s dedication to preserving its natural beauty and history amidst thirving growth and prosperity.

Enjoy the scenery and look for more in the weeks ahead as the City Hall approaches completion in mid-December.
